The european project LUCIA (Understanding Lung Cancer related risk factors and their Impact Assessment) continues to advance in the development of a digital infrastructure focused on screening, translational research and clinical follow-up of lung cancer, with the aim of improving the early identification of risk factors in the participating population.

One of the key components of the project is the electronic data collection system (eCRF) developed by BILBOMÁTICA, designed to ensure the traceability, quality and consistency of clinical data generated in different countries and healthcare settings.

The LUCIA clinical study is being carried out in collaboration with European reference centers that represent complementary realities: the Centre for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases of Riga and the Oncology Centre of Latvia (Latvia), the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Liège (Belgium) and the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) in Spain.

In the clinical field, the project is led by Osakidetza – Basque Health Service, through the IIS BioBizkaia Health Research Institute and the Cruces University Hospital, responsible for coordinating the study design and monitoring the participants.

The eCRF developed for LUCIA has the direct participation of researchers and clinical professionals specializing in lung cancer from each center, ensuring that the tool meets the real needs of the study and facilitates reliable, homogeneous, and secure data collection.

Its design is geared towards optimizing the workflow of medical teams, reinforcing the integrity of information and facilitating comparative analysis between European cohorts, thus contributing to the identification of risk factors associated with lung cancer.

Longitudinal follow-up of participants, an essential aspect of screening programs, has also been strengthened, and quality control mechanisms have been integrated to verify the consistency and integrity of the data before analysis. Furthermore, the capacity for integrating risk results has been expanded, facilitating the comparison of predictive models validated within the project.

The eCRF is based on a collaborative and secure environment that guarantees the protection of clinical information and fosters coordinated work across disciplines and countries. Thanks to this integration, it has become a shared European infrastructure for clinical research, connecting hospitals and research teams across Europe and strengthening scientific cooperation in the fight against lung cancer.
